What happened: in an interview with IGN, covered again today by Game Rant and earlier by GamesRadar+, Rob Nelson of Rockstar North explained how much freedom GTA VI's story missions give you.
What Rockstar said
"That first mission that you saw in the [Netflix Extended Look] where they're in the tower block trying to get out: there are multiple routes out of that tower block."
He also described the mission where Jason and Lucia pick up Raul: the first part is on rails while Jason shoots and Lucia drives, then you take the wheel. "There is an optimal route that you're told to get out, but if you don't follow it, you can still get out — the mission is essentially a police chase."
What it means for beginners
- Fewer instant "Mission Failed" screens for going the "wrong" way, at least in missions built on the wanted-level and robbery systems.
- The suggested route is there to help. You can follow it if you're new, or experiment once you're comfortable.
- Not every mission works like this. Nelson said some story moments still need more direction.
We haven't played it, so we're only reporting what Rockstar has said. More on the footage: GTA 6 trailers explained.
